Opening Talk: Human-centered AI and Application in Solving Business Problems

Distinguished Professor Fang Chen is an award-winning, internationally-recognised leader in artificial intelligence (AI) and data science. She is passionately innovative in her work, architecting and implementing data-driven solutions to problems met in industry and governments. Her experience in solving these complex real-life problems in large-scale networks span transport, water, energy, health, agriculture and many more sectors. She is also actively promoting ethical, human-centred AI.

Fang won the "Oscar" of Australian science – the Australian Museum Eureka Prize 2018 for Excellence in Data Science. She is the "Water Professional of the Year", awarded by the Australian Water Association in 2016. In 2021, she won the Australia and New Zealand "Women in AI" Award in Infrastructure and the NSW Premier's Prize of Science and Engineering.

Fang leads multidisciplinary teams of experts, together with whom she has won major scientific and industry awards on the national level. These include the Intelligent Transport Systems Australia National Award 2014, 2015 and 2018, the NSW iAwards 2017, the VIC iAwards 2019 and 2020, and the National Award and NSW "Research and Innovation Award" 2018 and 2022 from the Australian Water Association.

She has built up a career in creating innovations, developing digital transformation strategies, and executing them with leadership and passion. With vast experience in many segments of industry, governments, and academic environments, allows her to formulate strategies for innovation, development, products and business growth.

Distinguished Professor Chen also has extensive global experience with more than 100 different entities across North America, Europe and many parts of Asia, under extremely varied circumstances from early-stage R&D, to product development and deployment. She has done exceptional work to bridge customer requirements and innovative technological solutions, creating value in business with innovations.

Professor Chen has created much ground-breaking research evidenced by 300+ refereed publications in science and engineering, including several books. In addition, she has filed 30+ patents in Australia, US, Canada, Europe, Japan, Korea, Mexico and China.

Fang is a member of the inaugural NSW Government AI Advisory Committee. She also serves on the expert panel of the Singapore National Science Foundation, and on several boards, including ITS Australia. Currently, Fang is the Executive Director of Data Science at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) and the Executive Director of the UTS Data Science Institute.

Kylie-Anne Richards

Kylie-Anne Richards is the Deputy Chief Investment Officer and leads the implementation of responsible investment practices at Fortlake. Kylie-Anne is also a member of the Fortlake Asset Management Board and a board member of IAM Funds.

Kylie-Anne has extensive industry experience both domestically and overseas, having worked at Macquarie Group in Hong Kong as Head of Financial Engineering for the Asia Pacific. Subsequently, Head of Indexation and Quantitative Trading Research at CLSA in Sydney. Most recently she held the position of Director, Portfolio Manager at QTR Capital, a proprietary trading business, which was active in trading MSCI Global Index rebalances in developed markets globally and depository receipt arbitrage in Australia and the USA.

Kylie-Anne is a tenured academic at the University of Technology Sydney with research and teaching interests in sustainable finance, green finance, ESG and high-frequency finance. Kylie-Anne has developed and lectures the Sustainable Finance subjects offered in the Master of Finance, MBA, Executive MBA, Master of Financial Planning and Microcrediential suite. She is an internationally published academic with papers appearing in ‘International Journal of Financial Engineering’, ‘Statistical Inference for Stochastic Processes’, among others.

Kylie-Anne completed her PhD at the School of Mathematics and Statistics, The University of NSW (UNSW). She was awarded the QRSLab Boronia Managed Funds PhD Scholarship in 2011. Kylie-Anne also holds a Master of Finance (Financial Engineering) from The University of Hong Kong, a Bachelor of Science (Mathematics and Statistics) and a Bachelor of Commerce (Finance) from The University of Melbourne.

Kylie-Anne is also a Board Member of Sport & The Spectrum Ltd, which is a not-for-profit enriching the lives of children on the Autism Spectrum through sport.

Michael Blayney

Michael has over 20 years’ investment management and consulting experience and joined BTIM from First State Super, where he was Head of Investment Strategy since January 2014. In this role, Michael was responsible for the establishment of an active asset allocation process and led the Fund’s Investment Strategy Team. Prior to this appointment, Michael was Head of Diversified Strategies at Perpetual for over five years, with portfolio management responsibilities for the manager’s range of diversified funds. Michael’s prior experience includes over 10 years in consulting roles at Watson Wyatt (now Willis Towers Watson) and NSP Buck.

Emma Pringle

Maple-Brown Abbott

Emma Pringle joined Maple-Brown Abbott in May 2020 as Head of ESG. Before Maple-Brown Abbott, Emma spent 14 years with BT, most recently as Head of Customer Governance and Sustainability where she had responsibility for the organisation’s product governance and sustainability functions across superannuation, investments and insurance. Prior to this, Emma held strategy and operations roles in BT’s private wealth, superannuation, investments, platforms and advice divisions. Before BT, Emma worked in blue-chip technology and financial services organisations in Sydney and London. Among industry collaborations, Emma served as co-Chair of the Australian Sustainable Finance Initiative (ASFI) technical working group on meeting community expectations and has experience across the asset owner, corporate and investor pillars of the ESG value chain. In her current role, Emma is responsible for the development and implementation of Maple-Brown Abbott’s ESG strategy, policies and governance. She also oversees the integration of ESG risks and opportunities into investment decision-making, engagement and proxy voting initiatives and stakeholder communications.

Viisti Dickens

Viisti is an Industry Expert at UTS, with both public and private sector including as a Senior Director in top tier consulting firms and in-house, across financial services, telecommunications, media, and education sectors. She focuses on helping organisations with their biggest challenges - including M&A, Diversity and Inclusion, Culture change, Risk, Innovation and ESG - often on high priority programs. Her focus on business transformation is commercial, strategic and pragmatic.

Viisti is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, jas a Masters of Law (USyd), Masters of International Relations (UQ & Sciences Po Paris), and a Bachelor of Business (QUT). She has lived and worked in France, UK, Chile and Vietnam.
